“Take a busload of women away for a day with God! What a crazy thought! At that time in 2006, Kathe Wunnenberg was on a personal retreat seeking rest, replenishment and direction from God. Her life was busy and full. She was struggling to balance marriage, parenting three sons (ages five, seven, and sixteen), a speaking and writing ministry, and a growing new organization called Hopelifters How could she possibly find the time or energy to organize a bus trip?” (From Hopelifter: Spreading Hope When Life Hurts, p.17) She prayed about it and felt God leading her forward. In God’s perfect timing four years later she connected with a Christian owned and operated bus company, Masters Touch Tours. In March of 2010, Kathe invited women from age 13 to 81 to be her guest and get on board for Hopelifters’ first Hope On Wheels day away with God adventure. Participants boarded a bus and traveled to a retreat center where they soaked in rest, ministry and encouragement for the day. Hopelifters raised funds and developed partnerships for this event and encouraged participants who were able, to ‘pay it forward’ for a woman on a future trip. The next bus trip focused on women who lost children, scheduled just prior to Mother’s Day. This mothers’ trip has grown into an annual tradition for Hopelifters in Arizona.
